Vibrating Dog Collar

Ideal Use and Ideal Traits of a Vibrating Dog Collar

Many prospective pet owners do not realize that all dogs will need training at some point in their lives. Since dogs communicate on a different level than humans, you cannot and should not expect your little puppy to know every single sound, gesture and facial expression coming from you.

But if your dog is deaf one, then the whole dynamics of your pet-human relationship will change.  You will experience many instances when training your dog seems to be an exercise in futility, all because your dog cannot hear your commands.  If you find yourself in either of these two cases, rejoice for there is good news.  You have a training tool- the vibrating dog collar.

Ideal Use

As the name implies, the dog collar vibrates when it is activated by remote control.  As such, you will find that all vibrating dog collars have two basic parts.  One, the collar itself attaches to the dog’s neck like any other pet collar.  Two, you activate the dog collar by pushing on a button on the remote control unit.  In many models, you can deliver various vibration modes at different range of distances.

The vibration itself does not hurt the dog in any way.  You may find dogs that manifest a negative reaction to the vibrating dog collar but that will soon change for the better once your pet realizes that it is only a method for calling his attention.  As such, you should not view the dog collar as a magic wand with which your dog can instantly respond to your commands.  It is just a training tool that you can put to good use if and when you know how to use it.

Keep in mind that not all deaf dogs need a vibrating pet collar for their training sessions.  You will need the vibrating pet collar only when you seem to have a more difficult time calling and holding your deaf dog’s attention to your commands.  So whenever you are using the vibrating dog collar for training purposes, you must remember to use it according to the dog’s personality.  Just because something works with one dog does not necessarily mean that it will work on another.  This is for the simple reason that just as humans has individual personalities, so do dogs.

It must also be emphasized that the vibrating pet collar is not similar to the shock collar.  While the former delivers vibrations to call the dog’s attention, the latter provides for mild to moderate electrical shocks to correct misbehavior.

Ideal Traits

When choosing a vibrating dog collar, you must look for two or more of the following features:

  • It should have a long range so that the farther it is, the better for you.
  • Both the dog collar and the remote control unit should be waterproof.
  • The collar should be small enough so that your dog will only carry 5 percent of his body weight while the remote control unit should easily fit in your jeans’ back pocket.
  • It should have an option for both vibration and tone.
  • Both collar and remote control unit should have long battery lives.

If you can find a vibrating dog collar with all these features, then the benefits of better training sessions and peace of mind will be well worth the price.
